He was born Jan. 13, 1837 in England and died Feb. 23, 1867 and is buried in Foster Hill Cemetery in Clay City, Clay County, IL.  Jonas immigrated from Liverpool to the U.S. arriving in New York City on June 30, 1858, age 22 aboard the City of New York,  On the ships passenger list it states that he was a mason heading for Illinois.

He served in the Civil War in Company A of the 98th Illinois Infantry.  Jonas was listed as being 5'9" with black hair, blue eyes and a dark complexion and living in Flora, working as a mason. He joined up on Aug. 9, 1862 in Clay Co., and mustered in on Sept. 3, 1862 at Camp Centralia, IL.  Jonas mustered out June 27, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mr. [Nathaniel] Behymer married Sept. 1, 1871, Louisa, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Evans natives of North Carolina. They died in Illinois. She was the widow of Jonas Gill, by whom she had two children, one living - Harry, born Oct. 22, 1866; Mary E. is dead. By the last marriage there are six children, three living - Frank born Sept. 8, 1875; Nellie, born Jan. 13, 1879, Claud born Oct. 15, 1881. [History of White County, Illinois, Together with Sketches of Its Cities, Villages & Townships, Educational, Religious, Civil, Military & Political History, 1883]

Records:

Daniel 50, farmer, b. NC

This record seems to indicate that her parents were John & Rachel Evans.  Her death certificate says Daniel Evans.  Robert Wheeler's 4 generation chart says her father was Seth Evans.  Is this the correct family?

In the earlier census records and the county history Louisa says that her father was born in North Carolina.  Now she is saying that he was from Wales.  Not sure what's up with that.

Did the census taker out of respect use N. to stand for Mrs. Nathaniel Behymer instead of using her first name?
